In 1990 BMW formed a joint venture with British aerospace company,
Rolls-Royce PLC to produce aircraft engines for business jets.
This brought BMW back to its roots. In 1992 BMW broke round for the first
BMW plant in the United States. This plant is located in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
In 1992 BMW outsold Mercedes-Benz in Europe for the first time. In 1994 BMW acquired
80% of Rover Group - a British manufacturer of luxury cars, small cars and Land Rover
sport-utility vehicles - from British Aerospace PLC. This brought BMW into new markets.
In 2000, sterling's value has increased by almost 50 percent. The costs of modernization of Rover have risen even higher. No longer viable for BMW, the company sells Rover and MG for the token sum of ten pounds. Land Rover is sold shortly afterwards, but BMW chooses to retain the MINI brand.
BMW has had an outstanding history. They will continue to grow and evolve into the 21st century. They will continue to win awards and will continue to fascinate us. BMW has been a big influence on many markets over the past 90 years and will continue to be a big influence. |
